Second season of Trapped annonunced

RVK Studios, Icelandic national broadcaster RUV and Dynamic Television today announced that Icelandic crime series Trapped, created by Baltasar Kormákur, has been renewed for a second season.

Universally praised by television critics and audiences alike, the Icelandic crime series attracted a strong and passionate core audience throughout the world during its 10-episode run. Season two of the hour-long series is slated to premiere Fall 2018.

Season one of the drama was heralded as “a spell-binding chiller” by the Financial Times, “seductive, involving, gripping” by The Guardian, “superior small-screen comfort food” by The Hollywood Reporter, and “a feast for the eyes” by the Mail on Sunday. In the UK, the series premiere on BBC Four reached over 1.2 million viewers. In France, episodes one and two reached more than 5.7 million viewers on France 2.

Audiences averaged more than 500,000 viewers for NRK Norway and Trapped was watched by 86% of television households in Iceland. Trapped will make its season one debut in Germany on ZDF this Fall.

Based on an original idea by Baltasar Kormakur, Trapped tells the story of a troubled cop investigating a grisly murder when his small Icelandic town is hit by a powerful blizzard, trapping the villagers and most likely the killer in the town. Season two of the series will follow the same lead characters as they examine an even more complex and challenging murder case.

“I am so excited to get to assemble this great group of talent again” says Kormákur. “This story is far from over. There is a lot more to come, both storywise and also concerning our lead characters, I guess we all want to get to know them a little bit better”.

“Our immensely talented cast and crew delivered a truly superb premiere season. Audiences overwhelmingly responded strongly to the thrilling drama and powerful characters and they will find the next season every bit as gripping,” added Klaus Zimmermann, managing partner, Dynamic Television. “We look forward to continuing this phenomenal journey with our creative partners into season two.”

“This is thrilling news for us and our audience,” says Skarphedinn Gudmundsson, Commissioning Editor and Head of TV for RUV. “Season one was nothing less than a phenomenon in Iceland, breaking every TV record possible and became the highest rated series ever with an average rating of around 60% and over 90% share. We have every believe season two could become even more successful, especially after having been given some insight into the premise, which we believe is even more intriguing and suspenseful than for season one.”

Trapped stars Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, True Detective) in the lead role and is joined by Bjarne Henriksen (Borgen, The Killing), Ingvar E Sigurðsson (Everest, K19 The Widowmaker), Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir (Virgin Mountain, White Night Wedding), Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir (The Sea) and Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Borgias, Fortitude).

It is written by Sigurjón Kjartansson and Clive Bradley. The producers are Baltasar Kormakur and Magnus Vidar Sigurdsson. It is executive produced by Dynamic Television’s Dan March and Klaus Zimmermann. The series is filmed in Iceland by RVK Studios and is distributed by Dynamic Television.

The series has been sold to BBC, ZDF, France Televisions, SVT, NRK and DR among others.
