Enabling Public Service Media to Better Serve Globalizing Societies

The Global Media Exchange is being developed by public service broadcasting associations NORDVISION (5 broadcasters in Northern Europe), TAL (more than 200 Latin-American broadcasters and audiovisual operators), ERNO (a news exchange network of 11 South-East-European broadcasters), and RAI Educational (Italy).

The main objective of GLOMEX lies in the exchange of quality tv programmes and audiovisual content with free transmission rights available to the partners. The editiorial focus lies on programmes which promote cross cultural understanding, in accordance with the needs of each partner and their member organisations.

GLOMEX is based on the common experience that in an increasingly globalized situation, the need for more Public Service content is dramatically growing and urgent.  Therefore a significant goal is that the partners be given access to a variety of content. At the same time, it is necessary to emphasize the great importance of multiculturalism, the knowledge and identification with other cultures, in strengthening citizenship in our respective societies.

Despite the urgent need of adequately serving the needs of a multicultural global society, Public Service Broadcasters around the globe share a considerable lack of financial backing and support. Therefore GLOMEX opens innovative ways to provide quality audiovisual content available at low cost, especially for thematic niche channels.

The GLOMEX working group also shares knowledge and experiences and together rethinks the meaning of Public Service in a globalized world. Aside from the exchange of programmes and knowledge, the partners are working for a further strengthening of the co-operation with the possibility of other joint actions, such as further inter-regional co-productions, professional training and creative workshops.

GLOMEX is based on the conviction that a systematic and non-commercial exchange of internationally relevant audiovisual content will lead to a better return and exploitation of production investments, helping in this way to free urgently needed resources for new public service productions.

GLOMEX is pleased to welcome public service oriented media and independent organisations from all over the world interested in joining the initiative.

UN Organization UNOAC; United Nations Organization Alliance of Civilizations, has expressed great interest in the initiative and has offered to host the first world conference for organizations working with public service program exchange. The conference planned for December 2011. On this occasion, the plan is to invite a wide range programexchange organizations; EBU, Copeam (Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators), URTI (International Radio and Television Union, particular French-speaking broadcasters), independent Arab television stations, ABU (Asian Broadcasting Union), WITBN (The World Indigenous Television Broadcasters Network) and other relevance networks.
